A smooth call helps to get the fish biting.  You don’t always have to use a continuation bet.  Sometimes a flat call gets opponents thinking they are stronger than what they really are.

Over use of the pre-flop bet will start to raise suspicions so use it with care, otherwise players will get suspicious and start calling you.

One of the key decisions in poker betting is deciding how much to raise.  It takes a while to figure out the normal accepted amounts to raise.  When you are playing with seasoned poker players and you go out of these boundaries… watch the raised eyebrows and puzzled looks – what the hell are you doing?

Easiest thing to do is check, call and fold – but when you decide right I am going to raise then you have to think carefully – by how much should I raise?

Raise a little and the other players may not take you seriously, or you wont draw the chips into the middle.  Raise too much and will they believe you, or will you having them not commit anything to the middle.

The other poker skill is the speed with which you raise – let it go a few betting rounds until it slowly mounts up to a nice big pot.  Try and do this too quickly and players will pull out of the hand.

Well, it depends on the type of poker you are playing.   Are you playing Texas Holdem?  And, what are the poker odds of getting a flush with a 7 card hand?   There is a 3% chance of a flush in a 7 card hand, or a 32 to 1 probability of a flush.

All that aside, if there are three suited cards on the table, chances are quite strong that someone may be sitting with suited cards, to make up the flush???   There is a 3,25 to 1 probability that suited cards will come up in a dealt hand… thats a strong chance!!  Is it worth the chance?

All I can say is it depends on how the players behave and how they bet.  It takes a full house or better to beat a flush, so if you don’t have that (which most times you won’t), then it may be better to back down.  Look at the poker odds of getting a full house if you want to check.  Then again all you need is a better flush than your opponents – so do you have strong cards of the same suit?

But what better time to use a semi-bluff, three suited cards for everyone to see… get them thinking twice about what you have…  You have to love poker… so many variables to think of all the time!!!

Just because you have a pair of aces it doesn’t mean that you can switch off and you have it in the bag.
