Master Online Holdem

Like many challenging pursuits, Texas Hold’em is easy to learn, but difficult to master. Online Texas Hold’em is no different. In fact, online Texas Hold’em is deceptively easy to learn, with very clear instructions and guidelines provided by websites trying to get your business. What skills do you need to master online Texas Hold’em?

The most important key skill you need in order to master online Texas Hold’em is discipline. This is even more important in the online game than in a live casino. In a live casino you often show up prepared to play. You’ve planned the trip in advance, and you have a set number of hours in which to play. While you are there, your only thoughts are about poker. All of the sights and sounds around you relate to the game. There are many different things happening all around for you to focus on.

Online Texas Hold’em poker is a different story. You play whenever you feel like it. You can play for fifteen minutes or fifteen hours. You can play early in the morning or in the middle of the night. Most importantly, it is much less likely that you will be completely focused on the game. The temptation to watch television, take a phone call, pay bills or surf the Internet is very great. Texas Hold’em requires patience, and you often have to wait a long time to get a hand to play. There is action to follow in those lean times, but it is not nearly as engaging as in a live game. Many professionals fight this by playing two, three or four or more tables at the same time, but this is not recommended for someone who has not already mastered the game.

For this reason, to be a master of online Hold’em, you must be prepared to focus entirely on the game. Move your computer to a quiet, private room where you can completely focus on the task at hand. If you are not ready to play multiple tables, use your down time to generate information about your opponents. Good poker websites allow you to input detailed notes on your opponents right on the screen, so this will serve you well later.

Focus and discipline are key, but they will not make you a winning player unless you also understand winning principles. Study the great players and the top books on Texas Hold’em. Learn the basic ideas behind hand selection, position, pot odds, and the other major ideas and be sure you know them well. Keep detailed notes on all of your sessions and analyze them afterwards to see where you went right and where you may have made some mistakes. You may not start winning right out of the gate; you will certainly experience extended and difficult losing streaks. If you stick to your principles and remain disciplined, however, over the long run you can become an online Texas Hold’em master.
